We all know how much work it is to have a home full of family & friends around the holidays. Our Thanksgiving place setting tips provide step by step instructions on how to set your table so you can stress less this holiday.
When your guests walk up to your dining room table and their place is set with special & unique touches you are creating a welcoming and inviting space. A well set table shows that you have paid attention to every detail. You are not only putting thought into the meal but also into the environment you are trying to create.
Your Thanksgiving place settings should include…
- Base for the Table – This includes table linens. They can be plain, checked, patterned, or have a seasonal twist. If you prefer not to use a base you can use a round placemat & charger in it’s place.
- Base for each Plate – This is a charger or round placemat on top of the base to create a layered look.
- Plate – A dinner sized plate first and then a salad plate on top (if necessary). You can use china for a more formal feel or solid colors for a classic & simple look.
- Flatware – This could be pewter, gold, or silver flatware in the proper placement. This would include a knife and spoon to the right of the plate and a salad fork and dinner fork to the left. You can add a dessert fork if you would like in the top center of the plate.
- Glassware – At a minimum you should have a water glass which should be 8-12 oz. You can also add a wine glass or goblet for sparkling apple cider to the right of the water glass.
- Cloth napkin – You can tie the napkin for a more casual look or use a napkin ring (my preference). You can also fold the napkin into thirds and place it under the dinner plate so half of the napkin is cascading down onto the table linens (see below photo).

7. If you choose not to use a base for the table you should use coasters if you need to protect your table from water rings.
8. A special touch at each place setting – this could be a handwritten name card to assign their seat or a custom mini everlasting wreath. Or a tea light glowing at the top of their place setting or a small favor or gift you know they would love. These little touches make guests feel extra special.

Your Thanksgiving table should include the 3 C’s…
- Centerpiece – It’s always fresh flowers at my table – locally grown & seasonal is my preference.
- Condiments – Including salt & pepper or other seasonings, spices or sauces.
- Candlelight – Taper candles or tea lights are my personal favorites. A glowing warm table feels like a safe and cozy place to enjoy a meal gathered with friends and family.
The most important “C” not included here is conversation! Stay tuned for some fun Thanksgiving conversation starters that will work with any crowd.
