How to make the Best Sugar Cookie Frosting!

Making sugar cookies is a tried and true holiday tradition for our family. When my Dad visits for Christmas we always make sugar cookies together with my daughter. This sugar cookie frosting recipe is so delicious and simple. It has been our go to for many years.

We branched out and tried something new this time around – we made peppermint frosting which we would highly recommend! The instructions below outline how to make a plain frosting or the peppermint. This recipe makes enough frosting for ~24 sugar cookies.

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz. of cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • Optional: Food coloring
  • Optional: 1-2 teaspoon peppermint extract – this is if you want to make peppermint frosting.

Step One: In a medium bowl add the softened cream cheese, soft butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla. Using an electric mixer mix well until completely smooth. You can also do this in your Kitchen Aid mixer.

Step Two: Optional – Add in the food coloring and mix well. Also optional is adding in 1-2 teaspoons (to taste) of peppermint extract, again, mix well.

Step Three: Spread over your cooled sugar cookies and top with sprinkles.

Step Four: Enjoy!
