Thanksgiving Conversation Starters

Thanksgiving is a time to give gratitude, gather with loved ones, and to share a special meal together. It’s also an opportunity to connect & have quality conversation with those around the table. Here are some ideas for Thanksgiving conversation starters you can use…

  1. What Thanksgiving tradition means the most to you and why?
  2. What is your favorite dish served at Thanksgiving dinner?
  3. What is a lesson you learned this year that you are grateful for?
  4. The great debate – Pumpkin Pie or Pecan Pie? Maybe both?!
  5. What is your favorite thing about the Fall season?
  6. What are you most thankful for this Thanksgiving?
  7. What makes you happy? Share favorite books, movies, tv shows, activities you enjoy, best hiking trails, etc.
  8. If you could travel to any country in the world where would you go and why?
  9. If you could invite anyone to your Thanksgiving table, who would it be?
  10. Would you participate in the Macy’s Day Parade if you were invited to? What would you want to do in the parade?
  11. If you were a dog handler at the National Dog Show (which airs on Thanksgiving) which breed would you want to present?
  12. Finish this sentence… It is not Thanksgiving without ____________________.

A dear friend gave me a gratitude journal in late 2020 and I recently came across it while going through my book closet. The journal starts with 5 prompts that I’d highly recommend you take the time to do – perhaps it can be a Thanksgiving activity at your dining room table this year or something you do in a quiet reflective moment on your own.

  • Make a list of people you are grateful for;
  • List the top 10 memorable events in your life that you are grateful for;
  • List the top 10 places you have visited that you are grateful for;
  • List things that you have now for which you are grateful for;
  • List the top 10 teachable moments from your past that you are grateful for.

If you feel comfortable, share your gratitude with those that you are with this Thanksgiving. Gratitude has the power to change your perspective and it will bring positive energy into all that you do. It is a feeling of thankfulness for the blessings we have received – and will continue to receive into the future.
